Animal Control

The Bureau of Animal Control is responsible for enforcing all Federal, State and local laws pertaining to the ownership and treatment of animals within the City of Long Beach and contract cities. The Bureau conducts annual low-cost rabies clinics to assist residents in complying with licensing laws, and provides public education and awareness programs on responsible pet ownership and the importance of spaying/neutering to combat the animal overpopulation problem. Annually, the Bureau of Animal Control responds to over 12,500 calls for service and handles more than 12,500 animals.

Administration/Kennels
The Administration/Kennel program assists the public with redeeming pets impounded at the shelter, purchasing/renewing dog licenses, renting humane animal traps and impounding stray animals. The administration program also provides public relations and humane education programs, both on-site at the Companion Animal Village and in the community.

Field Services
Field Services operates a 24 hour/7-day a week program to impound stray and vicious animals, and provide emergency treatment to injured animals.

Investigations
The Investigation program investigates vicious dog complaints, barking dog complaints and animal cruelty complaints. The Bureau prepares and presents animal abuse, as well as nuisance cases to the City Prosecutor’s Office for possible prosecution.

Long Beach Companion Animal Village
In 2001, the Bureau of Animal Control relocated to a new state-of-the-art companion animal care and control village. Thanks to a unique partnership agreement between the City of Long Beach and the spcaLA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Los Angeles), the two agencies now jointly deliver innovative and revolutionary care to the animals that enter the Village. Residents of Long Beach and contract cities also benefit from more efficient animal control services.

The P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village is a friendly and functionally efficient facility that serves as a national model for future animal shelters. The Village is housed on over 6 acres and provides a healthier and safer environment for the animals. Some of the exciting and innovative features of the Village include an interactive display of adoptable animals, cat colonies with screened porches allowing indoor/outdoor access, state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor dog kennels and a multipurpose education center.

Community residents and guests are invited to visit the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village to learn about the humane treatment and care of all animals and, perhaps, spend time with some of the wonderful creatures housed at the Village.
