African American infants in California are more than twice as likely to die during their first year of life in comparison to other infants.(The infant mortality rate for African American in 1999 was 12.9 deaths per 1,000 live births compared to statewide rate of 5.4 deaths per 1,000 live births).
Our Mission Statement
The goal of the African-American Infant Health Project is to maximize positive pregnancy outcomes in order to improve survival rates for African-American infants in the City of Long Beach.Obtaining early and continuous prenatal care is believed to significantly contribute to the reduction of infant mortality.But, having a positive birth outcome start before pregnancy and continues even after your baby is born.
About the African-American Infant Health Project (AAIHP)
The African-American Infant Health Project is a program designed to assist you in maintaining a healthy pregnancy and to provide support services for the first two years of your baby’s life.AAIHP has access to information and resources that can help you have a health pregnancy, and also a healthier lifestyle.
Examples of Assistance Provided:
- Obtaining Prenatal Care
- Free, or low cost health/dental care
- The WIC Program/Nutrition education
- Early childhood development and special needs
- Housing
- Infant care and immunizations
- Domestic violence awareness
- Substance abuse prevention and intervention
- Tobacco education to help you stop smoking
- Afro centric parenting
- Social support and empowerment

- Child support/Guardianship
- Healthy Communication Skills
- Continuing Education/Literacy building
- Employment Readiness
- Infant and Self-Care
- Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD’s)
- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
How Do I Qualify?
You can qualify if you are an African-American woman living in the city of Long Beach currently pregnant, or parenting children under the age of 2 years old.
