Safe Families

The Safe Families Workgroup is responsible for the implementation of the Safe Families Coordination Plan under Safe Long Beach. The Safe Families Workgroup designed to deconstruct the intergenerational cycle of violence and enhance protective factors by promoting increased coordination of existing resources, use of evidence-based programs, and data driven results. Specifically, the goals and objectives of this Workgroup are as follows.

  • Goal 1: Increase access to violence prevention services.
    • Objective 1: Develop one universal citywide community resource guide.
    • Objective 2: Improve access to services through five existing Community Resource Centers.
  • Goal 2: Reduce family violence- child abuse, domestic violence and elder abuse.
    • Objective 1: Develop multi-prong strategy to address family violence.
    • Objective 2: Expand family strengthening programs.
    • Objective 3: Develop a family strengthening awareness and education campaign.

Safe Schools

The Safe Schools Workgroup is responsible for the implementation of the Safe Schools Coordination Plan under Safe Long Beach. This Workgroup is guided by research that suggests that low educational attainment (i.e. graduation from high school, truancy, early literacy) leads to negative outcomes later in life, including delinquency and victimization. Specifically, the goals and objectives of this Workgroup are as follows:

  • Goal 1: Increase the high school graduation rate
    • Objective 1: Increase student performance in English/Language Arts annually
    • Objective 2: Increase school attendance and decrease chronic absenteeism
    • Objective 3: Increase parent education and parent participation in schools
    • Objective 4: Implement the full service community school approach at five schools
  • Goal 2: Increase safety in and around schools
    • Objective 1: Increase community perception of safety around schools
    • Objective 2: Decrease bullying in and around schools

Currently, the Safe Schools Workgroup supports the implementation of two primary citywide initatives; the LBUSD "All In" attendance campaign and the Campaign for Grade Level Reading.

Safe Communities

The Safe Communities Workgroup is responsible for the implementation of the Safe Communities Coordination Plan under Safe Long Beach. The Safe Communities Workgroup is dedicated to decreasing violence through increasing civic engagement and participation in leadership programs as well as decreasing the unemployment rate. Specifically, the goals and objectives of this Workgroup are as follows:

  • Goal 1: Increase community resident safety
    • Objective 1: Increase resident engagement
    • Objective 2: Increase use of City and Neighborhood Improvement Programs
    • Objective 3: Increase the use of safe spaces for children, youth, adults and seniors
    • Objective 4: Five neighborhoods to develop and implement community watch
  • Goal 2: Decrease the unemployment rate
    • Objective 1: Increase the number of adults and youth using employment and job training programs
    • Objective 2: Increase the number of employers involved in job development
  • Goal 3: Reduce Part 1 crimes
    • Objective 1: Decrease homicides
    • Objective 2: Decrease rapes
    • Objective 3: Decrease robberies
    • Objective 4: Decrease aggravated assaults
    • Objective 5: Decrease gang-related homicides
