Medi-Cal Outreach (MCO) Program

Since 1998, the Medi-Cal Outreach (MCO) Program has been working in collaboration with five community partners to provide education and assistance to families about free and low-cost health insurance options and services in Long Beach. MCO staff members work with schools, churches, temples, small businesses, community-based organizations, parent centers, community clinics, WIC and Head Start to help lower-income and working families and adults increase their access to needed health care coverage and health care referrals. Primary services include:

Our meetings are held the 4th Thursday of every month from 9:00-10:30 AM. Collaborative members will receive updates on Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Healthy Kids, Kaiser Permanente Cares for Kids, and other community health resources and services. This is also a great forum for members to network with Health Department Officials, school district representatives, community workers, community-based organizations, community clinics, health plan partners, and Certified Application Assistors. We look forward to seeing you there!

Community Resources

  • Screening/Referral: Process normally takes about 15 minutes where families are assessed for possible program eligibility into Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Healthy Kids, Kaiser Permanente Child Health Plan or other health care options. Documents required to make a successful screening include proof of address, income, residency status, and pregnancy (if applicable).

  • Application Assistance: Staff are trained and state-certified to assist families in completing the required state and county application forms. Families are given the option to apply through the mail-in or online application process.

  • Utilization/Retention Education: One of the primary goals of the MCO Program is to encourage families to practice preventive health care. Advocates are educated about tips on how to use and keep their health insurance coverage.

  • Ongoing Case Management: Advocates are available Mondays through Fridays from 8 am-5 pm to assist families with questions or concerns about their heath insurance coverage.

Walk-ins and appointments are both accepted Mondays through Fridays from 8am-5pm. Services are available in English, Spanish, Cambodian and Vietnamese. The Medi-Cal Outreach Program is funded in part by the California Department of Health Services, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and Children and Families First Proposition 10 Commission.
