The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has been awarded a grant in the amount of $923,123 by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control to fund the Healthy Homes Demonstration (HHD). HHD is designed to control or eliminate household hazards leading to asthma, lead poisoning and unintentional injuries. The program identifies the homes with children, and/or children at the greatest risk for asthma or respiratory illness and provides education on the prevention and/or reduction of household hazards.

| Healthy Homes Workshop
The Healthy Homes workshop invites the community to learn helpful information on how to keep your home environment healthier, cleaner and safer. The purpose of the workshop is to increase resident’s awareness and understanding of a healthy and safe home and community environment using practical hands-on exercises and interactive dialogues. The workshop provides individuals and families information on the prevention of health hazards in the home and the prevention of asthma, allergies and other respiratory illnesses. Additionally, information on reducing pest infestation and how to effectively dialogue with landlords regarding improvement of housing conditions were also discussed.
Tenant Outreach Education
Complete comprehensive multiple-unit housing inspections to tenants who live in census track 5764.03 (zip code 90813) are conducted. These inspections allow residents to participate in a one-on-one outreach and tenant education program to learn techniques on how to prevent or reduce asthma, respiratory problems and unintentional injuries. |

Eligible families in census tract 5764.03 (zip code 90813) receive one-on-one outreach and education from the Healthy Homes Promotoras that is prescriptive to their individual homes. All enrolled tenants receive education about Integrated Pest Management (IPM). All enrolled tenants will receive “Green Kits” as incentives for participation in the Program. The Green Kit includes Murphy’s Oil Soap, vinegar, baking soda, spray bottle, reusable cleaning cloths, carbon monoxide detector (for units with gas appliances), bath mat, scrubbing pads, roach killing powder, child-proofing kit, fly swatter, and recipe card for non-toxic alternative cleaners.
Jr. Heath Inspector Program The Long Beach DHHS has developed the curriculum “Take a closer look: Be a Junior Health Inspector” which targets 4th grade students in high-risk areas to enhance their understanding of a healthy and safe home and community environment. This is a collaborative effort between DHHS, public works and LBUSD.
Healthy Homes Promotora Training Academy
The Promotora Training Academy was a comprehensive training program aimed to increase knowledge and awareness of environmental hazards. Thirty (30) community residents completed the five-day comprehensive training on eliminating or reducing housing-based health hazards leading to asthma, unintentional injury and lead poisoning. All trainings were presented in English and Spanish utilizing a certified interpreter. In addition, presentation materials and supplementary education materials were also provided both in English and Spanish. HHD has hired four Promotoras as community advocates assisting with tenant outreach, screening, enrollment and providing health education services to families that are interested in learning and implementing healthier living conditions in their home.
