MARINE SAFETY OFFICER (LIFEGUARD)

Requirements to File:
·Twelve or more months experience as an open-water lifeguard.
·
Ability to swim 500-meters in ten (10) minutes or less.·
Willingness to work various work schedules, shifts, evenings, weekends and holiday hours as needed.
·
Proof of a valid motor vehicle operator's license is required at time of appointment.(A current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at time of selection interview.)

Highly Desirable Qualifications:
(Proof of any certifications or education is required by close of filing)

A good knowledge of Long Beach swimming areas
·
EMT-1 Certification or CPR and Advanced First Aid Certification
·
Basic Scuba Certification
·
Completion of Swiftwater Rescue I and II Courses
·
Department of Boating and Waterways Core Classwork
·
Completion of California Penal Code 832 Course

If appointed, candidates will be required to serve the equivalent of a one-year probationary period during which time extensive training and instruction must be satisfactorily completed.

If appointed, candidate will be required to obtain a valid EMT Certification within six (6) months of appointment.

Examples of Duties:
Under general supervision, maintains surveillance of designated beaches and adjacent waters, marinas, bays and harbor areas from an assigned lifeguard station, vehicle or as a crew member assigned to a rescue boat in protecting life and property within the City's jurisdiction; advises swimmers and patrons of hazardous conditions in the ocean and on landside; answers calls for help and performs rescues; identifies and reports beach, facility and ocean hazards; administers medical aid and performs resuscitation work; lectures and gives instruction on marine safety to schools and civic groups; makes recommendations to ensure public safety; on a daily basis, maintains and cleans lifeguard facilities and rescue equipment; maintains and reports on public safety signage; observes illegal activity and when appropriate warns, writes citations, makes arrests, writes reports and testifies in court regarding the enforcement of applicable City ordinances, marina rules and regulations and Chapter 5 of the State Harbors and Navigation Code; uses auxiliary equipment such as rescue buoys, rescue boards, skin diving and SCUBA, river rescue, dories, boat lines, pumps, fire extinguishers, etc; reports and is a responder to marine fire incidents; assists in underwater search, recovery and salvage operations of persons, property and small boats; answers questions from visitors to the area; takes charge of lost persons; keeps and maintains activity logs, tallies beach attendance and makes written reports when necessary; supervises the activities of seasonal and hourly lifeguards; operates a motor vehicle; attends and completes in-service training as assigned; maintains physical conditioning commensurate with job duties; and performs other related duties as required.

Suggestion to Prepare in Becoming a Marine Safety Officer:

  • Get your Emergency Medical Technician basic certification.
  • Maintain physical condition (aerobic and strength) to perform the essential duties of a lifeguard.
  • Be able to demonstrate mechanical and technical aptitude required as a lifeguard (i.e. power tools, basic construction knowledge, critical thinking during emergency situations, etc)
  • Be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of mathematical principles, mechanical principles, and spatial relationships.
  • Test in other Departments for the experience.
  • Seek out and talk to an actual Long Beach Marine Safety Officer.

    NON-CAREER OCEAN LIFEGUARD

    The Non-Career Ocean Lifeguard examination is held at the Long Beach Fire Department's Lifeguard Headquarters located at 2100 E. Ocean Boulevard (west end of Junipero Avenue beach parking lot). For the next date and additional information or questions, please call (562) 570-1360.

    The exam consists of two rigorous qualifying parts: a 1000-meter ocean swim and a 400-meter run-swim-run. Because of the rigorous nature of the qualifying exam, candidates must be in excellent physical condition.


    Requirements:
    ·
    Successful completion of an interview and a physical examination prior to the 8-day, 80-hour training program.
    ·
    Available to work the various work schedules; evenings, weekends, and holiday hours as required.
    ·The commitment to work the entire summer season, approximately 11-12 weeks.

    Qualifications:
    ·No prior training or experience is required.
    ·
    17 years of age as of July 1 of the current calendar year.
    ·
    Proof of age required at the time of conditional employment offer (valid driver's license or birth certificate)
    ·Any applicant under 18 years of age must possess a valid work permit from his/her high school, a high school diploma or a G.E.D. certificate.

    Examples of Duties:
    Watch a designated section of the beach and water from an assigned station; answer calls for help and perform rescue and resuscitation work; warn bathers of beach and water hazards; administer first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation; use and maintain rescue equipment; take charge of lost children; answer questions of beach visitors; advise regarding local beach and waterway related ordinances; serve as a crewmember or ride-along on rescue boats and in lifeguard vehicles; assist in salvage operations of small boats and their property; complete and maintain activity records; and perform other related duties as required.
