THE SELECTION PROCESS

Requirements to file*:
Qualified candidates must satisfy requirements A, B,and C below;

a. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license

b. Eighteen (18) years of age or older

c.High School graduation or G.E.D. equivalency

*It is anticipated the minimum requirements for 2009 will include possession of the following valid certificates prior to filing:

- A current EMT Certificate / license

- A current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Certificate (visit CFFJAC for more information regarding this test)


Must have ability to
:
Read, comprehend, and retain technical training materials; endure strenuous physical activity requiring good balance, coordination, flexibility, and strength; make effective decisions; deal effectively with others; effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Desirable qualifications:
E.M.T. I or II certification; C.P.R. certification; bilingual English/Spanish or English/Southeast Asian language skills; and college level Fire Science coursework/degree.

Candidates must successfully complete a course of study to obtain an E.M.T. certificate during the recruit academy.

Examples of duties
:
Under immediate supervision in a training capacity, develops qualifications for the position of Firefighter; receives Academy instruction in Fire Department policies and procedures, firefighting, hazardous materials handling, rescue techniques, emergency medical procedures, physical fitness techniques, safety procedures, community relations, operation of firefighting equipment; observes and interacts, under supervision, with Fire personnel in the performance of firefighting and medical emergency duties; performs training and/or administrative duties as required.
