| Hot Zone The City of Long Beach - FREE wireless Internet access areas.
 Long Beach Hot Zones
In concert with our wireless partners, the City of Long Beach is proud to be the first city in the United States capable of connecting every building with high-speed broadband and one of the first to offer free public Internet access. This program is part of the City's commitment to provide cutting-edge technology access for residents, visitors and businesses.
W here are Long Beach Hot Zones?
The first Hot Zone is located Downtown on Pine Avenue between 1st and 4th Streets. Free high-speed wireless Internet access is available outdoors within this area. Conveniently, Pine Avenue offers more than 20 restaurants with outdoor seating. The second Hot Zone is located at the Long Beach Airport. So whether you want to check your e-mail, send a proposal or simply surf the Internet, this new technology is designed to give you and your laptop (or hand-held device) fast connectivity.
How does it work?
The high-speed Internet connection is a portal that uses the wireless protocol 802.11b. Nicknamed "Wi-Fi", this protocol has become the industry standard. The Hot Zones are accessible by any computer, portable or hand-held, that supports "Wi-Fi". Many new portable computers offer "Wi-Fi" wireless capability as an option, and almost all have a PC Card (PCMCIA) slot that can accept a "Wi-Fi" wireless card.
"Wi-Fi" cards may be purchased at most local computer and electronics stores.
