Ready to Start the Next Chapter

Release Date: 2018-07-20

Dear Friends,

Earlier this week we celebrated the inauguration of my second term as the Councilwoman of the First District of Long Beach. It has been an honor serving as your representative in our beautiful and diverse district. I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know how excited I am in beginning this next chapter. Since 2014, my team & I have been hard at work, every single day, focusing on what I like to call the “Three P’s”: People, Policy, and Projects. Serving all the wonderful people of our community, creating good policies, and working on community projects for this dynamic district of downtown, central, and the west side industrial neighborhoods has always been my top priority.

Over the last 4 years, we have taken a proactive approach to policy and constituent services. I am proud to have authored and co-authored over 120 successful items before the including authoring the City’s 1st Project Labor Agreement, protecting our environment by eliminating the use of Expanded Polystyrene (Styrofoam), ensuring that all immigrants know that they are welcomed in our city with our Long Beach Values Act and ensuring that local Long Beach businesses are getting more opportunities to secure contracts and bids with our City, to name a few. Concurrently, my office opened and closed 2000 constituent cases, ranging from potholes, missing street signs, to public safety issues. We also restored the South Division of the Long Beach Police Department in Downtown, added Long Beach Police officers to the Blue Line and implemented a Homeless Response Team within our Fire Department.

Additionally – District 1 is one of the fastest growing districts in Long Beach. It is home to nearly 1800 affordable housing units, more than any other district in the city, with over 300 more under construction. These affordable housing units are vital resources in serving low income seniors, veterans, families, and residents experiencing homelessness.

Over the next four years we will continue to be bold, innovative and proactive in the policy and community work that we bring forward. Some of the key areas my team and I will be working in include:

Digital Inclusion - for both residents and businesses, an issue I am very passionate about. By bridging the digital divide, we can ensure all residents of our district and Long Beach have access to affordable internet and are able to engage civically and socially to build stronger communities.
Protecting our Environment – through creating partnerships for robust litter abatement, as well as, better recycling and compost options for the downtown area.
Park Programming – by ensuring all families, seniors, and adults in this city have access to great park resources and events at every park throughout this great city.
Parking – We have already created over 200 parking spaces during my first term, and we are working on another 100 during the first year of this term. Also, we will be launching a pilot program to bring permitted parking to the 1st District for the first time ever.

This list is not comprehensive, so let's work together.
Share your ideas for the betterment of the First District

Thank you, again, for entrusting me as your Councilwoman. As always, please feel free to reach out to my office should you need any assistance, at 562-570-6919.

All the best,

LENA GONZALEZ
