On Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers responded to the 1700 block of Rose Avenue, regarding a neighbor dispute where one of the involved parties reportedly had a weapon. When officers arrived at the location they entered the yard to locate the reporting party.
Upon entering the yard the officers came upon a large dog that responded to their entry by chasing the officers in an aggressive manner. The officers quickly realized they were not going to make it out of the yard without being attacked. To avoid being bitten the officer drew his weapon and discharged it at the dog striking the animal at least one time.
The officers were able to flee from the yard with the dog still close behind. The dog ultimately continued down the street before retreating into a yard. The officers, realizing the dog was injured, located the animal and quickly notified animal control who arrived minutes later.
The dog was treated at a local animal care facility and is expected to survive. No one else was injured during this incident. As is customary with all officer involved shootings, detectives from the homicide detail were assigned to this incident. Detectives David Rios and Daniel Mendoza can be reached at (562) 570-7244.
