On Sunday, November 1, 2009, at approximately 3:25 p.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department responded to an injury traffic collision at Del Amo Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue.  The collision involved a single vehicle colliding into a traffic control pole.

The preliminary investigation revealed that prior to the fatal collision, the 52-year-old male Long Beach resident was involved in a hit and run traffic collision with a 43-year-old motorcyclist near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Carson Street. The motorcycle and the suspect's vehicle, a red 1989 Ford Tempo, were both traveling westbound on Carson Street approaching Atlantic Avenue when the Tempo rear-ended the motorcycle.  The driver of the Tempo then fled northbound on Atlantic Avenue.  As he passed through the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Del Amo Boulevard at a high rate of speed, he collided with a traffic control pole on the northeast corner of Atlantic Avenue and Del Amo Boulevard.

Officers at the Long Beach Police Department's North Sub-Station heard the collision and immediately ran over to the vehicle to render aid.

The Long Beach Fire Department was called and the driver was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He later died from injuries he suffered in the collision.   The drivers name is being with held until the next of kin has been notified.  The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Long Beach Police Department Accident Investigations Detective David Lauro at (562) 570-7355.
