| | | | Community Service Worker Program | THOMAS M. REEVES City Prosecutor CSW Program Clean streets, citizen empowerment... | The Community Service Worker (CSW) program was created by the City Prosecutor's Office in August 2002 and is administered in coordination with the Long Beach Superior Court, Long BeachVolunteerCenter and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine. CSW sends persons convicted of certain non-violent crimes that elect to perform community service in lieu of jail time and/or fines as a condition of their probation to clean the city’s parks, beaches and alleys. CSW is the first citywide program to match the sentence to the crime. Those who commit a crime in Long Beach pay the city back in the form of community service. This essentially increases work output at no additional cost to the City. In addition to the cost savings, CSW helps to create a sense of community among the workers. It is a program that promotes community pride. According the City Prosecutor, up to 5,000 probationers potentially qualify for the program each year. Currently, there are 17 CSW worksites located throughout the city that, together, offer community service opportunities seven days a week. Each worksite is equipped with trained supervisors who are responsible for checking in, checking out and monitoring the CSW workers. In addition to the CSW worksites, CSW workers also participate in community clean ups sponsored by various Long Beach neighborhood groups. All CSW workers participating in community clean ups are supervised by a trained volunteer CSW supervisor. To learn more about the CSW program, or how you can become a volunteer CSW supervisor, please call Noel Hacegaba at (562) 570-5727. | | | | CSW workers clean alleys. | CSW workers paint off graffiti. | | | | | Clean sidewalks. | Clean the beach. | |
