Meet the City Prosecutor, Thomas M. Reeves


Tom Reeves was elected Long Beach City Prosecutor in July 1998 with 60% of the vote, re-elected in 2002 with 76% of the vote and was unopposed in 2006 when he secured his third term. With a population of almost 500,000 people, Long Beach is the fifth largest city in California and the thirty-fifth largest in the nation. As City Prosecutor, Tom supervises a staff of 42 employees, 20 attorneys and 22 support staff, and administers a budget of 5.1 million dollars. His office is responsible for prosecuting all adult misdemeanors and infractions committed in Long Beach and for drafting penal ordinances. Tom’s accomplishments as City Prosecutor were recognized by his peers in the Long Beach Bar Association when he was named Lawyer of the Year 2004.He was the first prosecutor and the first government lawyer to receive this prestigious award.Tom has also been twice elected President of the Los Angeles County Prosecutors Association.

Prior to his election as City Prosecutor, Tom served for 10 years as a Principal Deputy City Attorney in the Long Beach City Attorney's Office, where he supervised a staff of 16 with responsibility for all City litigation. In addition to his supervision and management duties, Tom maintained a regular trial caseload defending or prosecuting cases involving multi-million dollar exposure.

In addition to his service to the residents of Long Beach, Tom enjoyed a military career that spanned 40 years.From 1966 until his retirement 2007, Tom saw service in both the United States Army and in the United States Air Force.He entered the service at the rank of Private and retired at the rank of Colonel. From 2003 until 2007, Tom served as the Staff Judge Advocate for the California Air National Guard.In this position Tom was the senior legal advisor to the Commander of the California Air National Guard and was a member of the Adjutant General’s Joint Staff.Tom’s responsibilities included furnishing legal advice, opinions and assistance on military, civil and administrative subjects to the Adjutant General, the Air National Guard Commander, the Joint Staff, Air National Guard Wing Commanders and all junior Judge Advocates throughout California.

Tom’s awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" device, and the NATO Medal (Bosnia).

Tom and his family have been residents of Long Beach since 1972.
