ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Interns will have the opportunity to gain insight into how local government implements model sustainability programs while sharpening their writing, presentation, analysis and critical thinking skills under the supervision of leaders in the sustainability field. An internship with the City of Long Beach Office of Sustainability offers valuable, real-world job experience in California’s 5th largest city!

Exposure to sustainability programs/projects related to buildings and neighborhoods, urban nature, transportation, water, energy, waste reduction and eco products and services and the Departments that implement them

Experience staffing a city commission, the Sustainable City Commission, which will provide you with first-hand working knowledge of the public process

Apply what you have learned by creating a sustainability program or project for your college or university or implementing a community project

INTERNSHIP QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA, have at least junior standing & be pursuing a degree in Environmental Science/Policy, Public Administration/Policy, Business, Planning, Georgraphy or related field (graduate students welcome).

INTERNSHIP DATES & DEADLINES
At least one internship will be offered each semester with the City of Long Beach Office of Sustainability. Once all application submittals are reviewed, the top candidates will be invited for an interview and at least one top candidate will be selected. Internship start and end dates are flexible and the City will work with chosen interns to create their scheduled start and end dates and set work schedule.
Fall Internship: September 21, 2009 – December 11, 2009 Application Deadline: September 11, 2009
Spring Internship: January 26, 2010 – May 7, 2010
Application Deadline: November 20, 2009
Summer Internship: June 1, 2009 – August 28, 2009

INTERNSHIP BENEFITS
This is an unpaid internship and can be used for college credit. Interns will receive a free bus pass & bike locker, enjoy flexible schedules & work in downtown Long Beach.
