†Long Beach Green Map

So what is a green map?

The Long Beach green map is an ongoing effort of the Office of Sustainability to locate and highlight as many green and sustainable city-related features as we can identify and incorporate them into a series of maps initially, and then ultimately into a single large-format map. To create the map(s), we will be using a powerful computer program known as GIS, which stands for Geographic Information System. A GIS allows you to organize geographic data into different map layers or themes. You can then assemble the different map layers into a complex map that communicates many things at once and may reveal patterns that you didnít see before.

At first we will be posting PDF maps featuring single themes that will later become the building blocks of the green map. Viewing the themes individually will allow you to learn about them one by one, prior to them being combined into the final green map.

So what is the first theme in our green map?

It starts with parksÖ

Did you know that the City of Long Beach has 112 distinct city parks, open spaces and special use facilities (such as the Belmont Plaza Pool)? In a highly urbanized area like Long Beach, places that arenít covered with streets and buildings are very important to the health and well-being of the people that live there. An important step for a sustainable city to take is to make sure that these open spaces remain open; because once open spaces are lost they arenít always easy to get back.
