The Long Beach City Clerk Department is seeking civic-minded citizens who would like to get involved in the election process. Registered voters are needed to work at polling places as precinct officers for upcoming elections. A precinct board consists of one inspector and three clerks. Duties include:
1. Setting up the polling place.
2. Locating the voter's address on a street index and lining through the voter's name.
3. Asking the voter to sign his/her name and address in the roster index.
4. Issuing the voter an official ballot.
5. Depositing the voted ballot into the ballot box, and
6. Following the closing procedures at the close of the polls.
As a precinct officer you will receive training on polling place operations. Though Election Day is long, approximately 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., you will receive an honorarium for your time and commitment. Precinct inspectors receive $150, and precinct clerks are paid $100 for working on Election Day. You will receive an additional $25 for attending a mandatory training session.
Precinct inspectors are responsible for picking up precinct supplies, doing pre-election preparatory work, transporting the supplies to the polling place, and to the check-in center after the close of the polls.
Qualifications:
1. U.S. citizen at least 18-years-old
2. Registered to vote in the State of California.
3. Able to work 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on election day.
4. Able to read and speak English fluently.
We are also looking for bilingual poll workers who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, Khmer, Korean and Tagalog.
In order to provide for a greater awareness of the elections process, the rights and responsibilities of voters and the importance of participating in the electoral process, as well as to provide additional members of precinct boards, an elections official may appoint not more than two students per precinct to serve under the direct supervision of precinct board members designated by the elections official. A student may be appointed, notwithstanding lack of eligibility to vote, subject to the approval of the board of the educational institution in which the student is enrolled, if the student possesses the following qualifications:
- Is at least 16 years of age at the time of the election to which he or she is serving as a member of a precinct board.
- Is a United States citizen or will be a citizen at the time of the election to which he or she is serving as a member of a precinct board.
- Is a student in good standing attending a public or private secondary educational institution.
- Is a senior and has a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Student poll workers are paid the same as other poll workers, and must attend training. If you are interested in being a student poll worker contact your school administrator for the specific guidelines pertaining to your particular school.
