Polling Places

In a number of precincts there may be a need for polling places. Compensation for using your home or business on Election Day is $25.

We are looking for polling locations that:

  • Are accessible to voters with disabilities
  • Available 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Election Day.
  • Rest rooms (for poll workers only)
  • Adequate lighting and heat if necessary
  • No access to selling or dispensing of alcoholic beverages
  • Polling place cannot be located in a residence or business of a candidate or a candidate’s family in the jurisdiction of the candidate.
  • Adequate parking.

HOW POLLING PLACES ARE CHOSEN
WHY DOES MY POLLING PLACE CHANGE?

Every residence in Long Beach has been assigned a precinct number by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. Once the precincts are determined, many are consolidated or grouped together for an election. Polling places are selected based on the following criteria:

  • The number of registered voters in each precinct.
  • The number of voters a polling place is able to handle.
  • Distance the voter must travel to the polling place.
  • Location of the polling place – might it involve crossing busy streets?
  • Accessibility of the polling place to voters with disabilities.
  • Complaints received about a polling place.
  • Comfort of the precinct officers (heat, restrooms, etc.)

The City Clerk Department makes every effort to use the same polling places for each election. As noted above, sometimes it is not possible to keep the same polling place. Therefore, it is important that you check the back of your Sample Ballot Pamphlet for your polling place location. Following is a list of reasons for choosing a particular polling place or for changing a polling place from one location to another:

  • The polling place may not have been available for this election.
  • The polling place may not be accessible to voters with disabilities.
  • Precinct may have been consolidated differently.
  • Another location more centralized.
  • Polling place selected for this election may have better access or parking.
  • Complaints about the previous polling place.

If you know of a place that would be a good polling location, please contact the Long Beach City Clerk Department at (562) 570-6101, or email the City Clerk.
