Industry Snapshot: Logistics/Goods Movement Industry
By 2012, an estimated 170,900 jobs are expected to open in Los Angeles County’s transportation industry — up 10% since 2002.
High-demand positions include truck drivers, operators, dispatchers, attendants, mechanics, engineers, warehouse workers, dock crews and rail transportation workers.
Workers in truck transportation and warehousing represent nearly 85% of direct Port jobs.
The Strategy: The tremendous employment growth projected for the logistics-goods movement industry is largely the result of the increased volume of goods moving through the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. Get industry-specific skills training and internship opportunities with local businesses; take logistics-related skill training classes with a new industry-specific curriculum for warehouse inventory control, tracking, and advanced transportation.

Julio's New Ride is part of a trade-related educational program developed by the Port of Long Beach for 12th graders at LBUSD High Schools. The video tells the story of how young people in California, Japan and Mexico are linked by international products, such as American-designed Skechers shoes, Japanese-made Toyota Prius automobiles and American-made Taylor guitars. The program illustrates how international trade connects young people throughout the world.
