$3.9 million grant will help transition C-17 plant

A $3.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment will help the City of Long Beach develop a comprehensive transition plan for the C-17 plant and surrounding site, its workforce, and businesses in the region’s manufacturing cluster.

“This is a unique opportunity to turn the closure of the C-17 plant into a transformative moment for the City of Long Beach,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “The investment made by the Department of Defense will help strengthen Long Beach’s economy, and solidify our City’s role as a leader in industry and innovation.”

The City will engage a number of stakeholder groups, industry champions, and workforce leaders to develop a vision for the property that restores employment, and builds on Long Beach’s rich history as a manufacturing leader.

“For decades, the Boeing C-17 program has brought a great sense of pride to our Long Beach community and to our nation," said Councilwoman Stacy Mungo. "This DOD grant will be extremely helpful as we look toward the future and find innovative ways to catalyze new workforce and business development opportunities on this storied site."

The two-year project, developed and administered in partnership with the City’s Pacific Gateway Workforce Development Board, will focus on three key areas: future uses for the C-17 plant and surrounding site; diversifying the regional supply chain for continued growth; and the development of a workforce skills platform to assist impacted workers looking to transition into new employment.

The City has begun to reach out to industry, education, and economic leaders to begin developing the project plan. These efforts will include opportunities for community input, various studies and analyses on potential site usage, and a broad effort to engage and support businesses connected to the C-17 supply chain.

The Office of Economic Adjustment helps communities adjust to defense industry cutbacks, base closures, and other impacts due to changes in military operations.

Several acres of former Boeing manufacturing sites have already become successful commercial real estate developments, including Douglas Park.
